The journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially taken shape, with all 48 nations now confirmed for football’s biggest global event, set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
As co-hosts, the three North American nations secured automatic qualification, paving the way for a diverse and competitive field drawn from every continent.
From Asia, countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Iran headline a strong group, joined by emerging sides including Uzbekistan and Jordan.
Africa will once again be well represented, with powerhouses like Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, and Egypt leading the continent’s charge, alongside other competitive nations such as Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa.
In North and Central America, teams including Panama, Haiti, and Curaçao have secured their places, adding depth to the host confederation.
South America’s traditional giants—Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay—return alongside strong contenders like Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay.
From Oceania, New Zealand stands as the region’s sole representative, continuing its presence on the global stage.
Europe contributes the largest number of teams, featuring elite nations such as England, France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, alongside a mix of experienced and rising sides including Netherlands, Croatia, and Switzerland.
The expanded 48-team format has allowed for broader global representation, with each confederation allocated increased qualification slots. Asia received eight direct places, Africa nine, Concacaf six, South America six, Oceania one, while Europe leads with sixteen direct spots. Additional Play-Off Tournament slots provided further opportunities for nations to secure qualification.
With the lineup now complete, anticipation continues to build as nations prepare to compete for football’s ultimate prize. The 2026 edition promises a unique blend of established giants and emerging challengers, setting the stage for a truly global spectacle.

The road to continental glory narrowed on Sunday as 20 clubs booked their places in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
In the Champions League, 12 sides progressed after a dramatic weekend of football. Tunisia’s Monastir and Algeria’s JS Kabylie turned on the style, scoring a combined 14 goals over two legs—Monastir crushing East End Lions 7–1 on aggregate and Kabylie dismantling Bibiani Gold Stars 7–0.
Elsewhere, Kenya Police edged Mogadishu City on away goals despite a 2–0 defeat, while Power Dynamos survived a scare against ASEC, winning 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 aggregate. Nsingizini Hotspurs and Rahimo also held their nerve in shootouts to advance.
Big names like Al-Hilal, Colombe, Al Ahly Tripoli, Rivers United, and FC Nouadhibou all rose to the occasion, overturning first-leg stalemates with decisive second-leg victories. Simba SC’s 1–0 first-leg win proved crucial as they held Gaborone United to a 1–1 draw to move through.
Two ties remain: Al-Merrikh must overturn a 1–0 deficit against FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo on 4 October, while defending champions Pyramids FC kick off their campaign against APR on 5 October in Cairo.
The CAF Confederation Cup produced its own fireworks. Morocco’s OC Safi and Zambia’s ZESCO United ran riot, scoring five each to cruise into the next round. Tanzania’s Azam, Burkina Faso’s USFA, and Ghana’s Asante Kotoko all delivered home-and-away victories. AS Otohô held Primeiro de Agosto to a goalless draw to seal a 2–1 aggregate win, while Djoliba edged Abia Warriors 2–1 overall. Flambeau du Centre prevailed in a thrilling 4–3 aggregate over Al Akhdar after a 2–2 second-leg draw.
A few ties are still alive: Pamplemousses host Maniema Union on 3 October trailing 2–1, while Djabal travel to Lubumbashi to face FC Simba, looking to overturn a 1–0 first-leg deficit.
The stage is set for a gripping second preliminary round as Africa’s finest continue their quest for continental supremacy.

Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika is enjoying a standout season with Club Brugge, but his latest headlines were sparked by a moment of frustration rather than brilliance.
During Brugge’s emphatic 4–0 UEFA Champions League win over Monaco last week, the 24-year-old was substituted in the 81st minute for youngster Lynt Audoor. Unhappy with the decision, Onyedika appeared visibly upset and declined to shake hands with his replacement.
Head coach Nicky Hayen quickly moved to cool any speculation of discord. Speaking after Onyedika’s full-match performance in a 2–0 league victory over St. Truiden, the Belgian tactician described the flashpoint as “a storm in a glass of water.”
“Oh well, that incident was quickly forgotten,” Hayen told Walfoot. “He played a fantastic game against Monaco and even scored. We talked immediately, and it was simply a misunderstanding. After the match he was already singing in the locker room. Onyedika is a simple, down-to-earth boy.”
The Nigerian international has been a target for top clubs, including Galatasaray and Eintracht Frankfurt, though neither met Brugge’s €25 million valuation. West Ham United are reportedly considering reviving their interest, but a move remains unlikely for now.

Arsenal and Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has firmly denied serious sexual assault allegations after appearing in court to face multiple charges.
According to court documents, Partey has pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three separate women. The charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred over an extended period, details of which are now the focus of legal proceedings.
During the hearing, Partey maintained his innocence, with his legal team stressing that he will contest all accusations. The case has drawn widespread attention both in the United Kingdom and Ghana, where the 31-year-old remains a key figure for club and country.
The court has scheduled further hearings as investigations continue. No trial date has been finalized, and Partey remains free on bail under strict conditions.

Atalanta skipper Marten de Roon has offered a lifeline to Ademola Lookman, urging the Nigerian winger to rediscover his focus and fight his way back into the squad.
Lookman, who represented Nigeria in recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, reportedly pushed for a summer move to Inter Milan. His stance has left him out of favour in Bergamo, with head coach Ivan Juric excluding him from Atalanta’s Serie A clash with Lecce last weekend and the upcoming UEFA Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, De Roon revealed that while the team remains focused on those present, the door remains open for the former Leicester City forward.
“I didn’t disturb him (Lookman). I don’t want to use up too much energy over this situation. We are concentrated on the squad and the players who are here,” De Roon said. “We are here and the door is always open.”
The 27-year-old winger must now decide whether to adjust his mindset and reclaim his place in a side chasing domestic and European success.
